Junkin’ Journey: Marion and Black Mountain, North Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Marion and Black Mountain, North Carolina

It’s hard to believe that 2016 is nearly complete, but we were lucky enough to find a weekend to squeeze in one final junkin’ trip this year. As you may remember, I have a particular fondness for the Appalachians in the fall- when the leaves on the trees wash the mountains in a perpetual sunset and “Nature’s glitter” swirls and twirls behind the car as we zoom by.

This time around, we didn’t go too far from home and explored towns along Interstate 40 just east of Asheville, North Carolina- focusing on Black Mountain through Marion. We checked out a BUNCH of shops but I’ve narrowed down my favorites- as highlighted below…Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina

As soon as the first inkling of Fall hits- be it a nip in the air, the faintest color on leaves, or pumpkin ANYTHING- we get a hankering for a road trip into the mountains. Autumn and mountain life just seem to go hand-in-hand…and since it’s September, it seemed natural for us to pack up the truck in search of vistas and vintage. This time around, we decided to go back to Boone, North Carolina- a place we’ve been before but never fully explored.

Home of Appalachian State University, it’s an energetic college town smack dab in the- you guessed it- Appalachian Mountains. And since we were driving through Blowing Rock, North Carolina on the way to Boone, we couldn’t help but stop at a few shops along the way…Read more ›

Shotgun!: Brevard, North Carolina (A Junkin’ Journey)

Shotgun!: Brevard, North Carolina (A Junkin’ Journey)

I love to sit down, study the map, and figure out where I want to head to next for my latest junkin’ journey. For obvious reasons (money, time…), I tend to stick relatively close to home- with the occasional longer sojourn to further-away stops. But for right now, I decided to head back into western North Carolina.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a mountain town.

So we headed up the mountain- literally- to Brevard, North Carolina. Home of the White Squirrel Festival, Brevard is a charming little town with an equally charming Main Street. And I’m happy to report, several charming little shops to explore…shall we?Read more ›

Shotgun!: Antiquing in Hendersonville, North Carolina

Shotgun!: Antiquing in Hendersonville, North Carolina

I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll go ahead and say it again- living in Upstate, South Carolina allows for easy access to a LOT of fantastic towns across the South. From Georgia to North Carolina to Tennessee to Virginia (and even Florida, Alabama, and Kentucky), the Southeast is truly my playground by car. Jon and I visited Hendersonville, NC (and its little sister town to the South, Flat Rock) shortly after moving here. As autumn approached, we kept hearing about North Carolina apples (Honeycrisps! Pink Ladies!)…and we were bitten by the bug. And the charming, vibrant town of Hendersonville just happens to be at the heart of all things Apple, including the annual NC Apple Festival.

Luckily for me, Hendersonville is also the home of some fantastically fun antiques and thrift shops, which I wanted to share with you! Let’s go junkin’… in between bites of apple cider donuts, of course…Read more ›

Shotgun!: Asheville, North Carolina (Part 1)

Shotgun!: Asheville, North Carolina (Part 1)

One of the many, many benefits of living in Greenville, South Carolina is our close proximity to Asheville, North Carolina. A pretty drive north through the mountains leads one to Asheville, a fun, funky, cosmopolitan town with a free spirit and welcoming arms for an upcycler like myself.

In fact, Asheville is truly a junk destination- there are so many amazing vintage-based shops, from salvaged junk to the highfalutin finery, that there really is a shop for everyone, regardless of taste. My husband and I go to Asheville more infrequently than either of us prefer, he for the beer, me for the pickin’…and since I have many more shops to explore for the blog, we’ll just go ahead and call this Asheville: Part I.

I’m pleased to say that we hit some old favorites as well as some new spots, all of which were fun and fruitful in their own way. Asheville truly never disappoints!Read more ›

Shotgun: Charlotte! (Pickin’ and Beers)

Shotgun: Charlotte! (Pickin’ and Beers)

It’s a rare Saturday that my husband, Jon, and I can go on an all-day adventure. We’re usually going in opposite directions on Saturdays…but with a busy March ahead of us, we decided that a day trip together was in order. It had been a while since I’d gone treasure hunting in Charlotte, so that’s where we directed the car to go.Read more ›
