Spider Web Decor for Halloween

Spider Web Decor for Halloween

Once upon a time, I created some shabby chic wall decor for our dining room with lace doilies in embroidery hoops. I loved how they looked, but as Halloween approached, I pictured a spookier version. A version that looked like Spider Web decor. And it would be VERY easy to make!

Now, you may be thinking- “But Sadie, you’ve already done a Halloween project with embroidery hoops!”. And you’re right- I have.

But this one would almost be a marriage of the two projects I showed you above.

So, I took a look at the lace doilies in my fabric stash and chose three to craft with. The two smaller ones may be more spider web-esque in nature, but the large one had a few stains and holes.

And this project is positively perfect for the imperfect doilies in your collections

Making a Spider Web Doily

To transform the lace doilies into spider web decor, I decided that dyeing them with grey fabric dye made the most sense. So, I bought a small box of Rit dye to give the doilies a spookier makeover.

I followed the directions on the box and the grey fabric dye worked like a charm!

See why I said that a few stains wouldn’t be a big deal? The dye masked them extremely well!

Next, I took a thrifted embroidery hoop and painted it black. Then, I just encased one of the lace doilies in the hoop, just as I had done in my previous blog post.

Basically, I set it in the embroidery hoop and pulled the doily taut as I tightened the rings. Then, I trimmed off any excess doily and sealed the edges with fabric glue or a fray stop glue.

Doesn’t that look awesome? But it needed a few more things to make it REALLY look like a Halloween spider web…

A fake spider was needed- actually, two! NOW it was definitely looking more like a Halloween spider web.

I still had a couple of lace doilies left! So, I painted more embroidery hoops and made another spider web decor. This time, I added a little mummy to the center of the web.

To make the mummy, I made a little stick figure with a white pipe cleaner. Then, I wrapped the entire thing in medical tape. SUPER EASY! And I hot glued him to the center of my Halloween spider web.

To make my Halloween spider web look even spookier, I added a fake spider hanging from a piece of grey thread. I simply threaded it through the embroidery hoop and one of the openings of the vintage doily. Perfect, right?

I also added a couple of hanging spiders to this spider web doily, as well. Like two babies coming to help mama feast on the mini mummy!

I’m definitely getting into the Halloween spirit with these! And they’re a great way to use up some of the lace doilies and old embroidery hoops in your stash.

  14. Sadie thanks for this idea I love it. I have been seeing a lot of ideas using embroidery hoops years ago I decorated like crazy with them. glad to see and hear they are back in style again. how was the dyeing process was it pretty easy to use? Susie

    • Hi, Susie- thank you for your comment! Yes, the Rit Dye was really easy to use and didn’t take long at all! I used a bucket in my kitchen sink- followed all directions on the box, but they took color so quickly that I didn’t leave them in for nearly as long as the box said to. I figured since they weren’t going to be washed over and over again like clothes, that it was fine to take them out of the dye solution quicker. 🙂
