Farmhouse Coffee Sign from a Cutting Board

Farmhouse Coffee Sign from a Cutting Board

Now that cooler weather is approaching (hurray!), I thought a coffee-themed project would be wonderfully seasonal. Both my husband and I love coffee, so I decided to make a farmhouse coffee sign for our kitchen.

One of my favorite, FAVORITE things to find at the thrift store is a cutting board. Even the ones that are terribly beat up and even a little gross.

Why?

Because they are super inexpensive and really easy to repurpose into a fresh idea, like my idea for a DIY a coffee sign! So when I found this little gem (for a whopping $0.60), I snapped him up immediately.

He was the perfect size for a farmhouse coffee sign. Not too big, not too heavy, but the right size for a stencil that I already had and really wanted to use.

Because he was a little stained (and not in the pretty way), we had to remove a layer or two of his previous life.

Thank goodness for our orbital sander! I used it to buff out all of the stains and some (not all) of the knife scars.

Sanding a cutting board from the thrift store

After the cutting board had been sanded and wiped down to remove the dust, I gave him a couple of coats of one of my favorite wood stains.

It’s nice and rustic, perfect for a farmhouse coffee sign.

When the stain had dried, I had a gorgeous canvas to work with!

I loved the remnant scars from knives. They gave my DIY coffee sign that weathered appearance that people pay a lot of money for when shopping for farmhouse kitchen decor!

I already had a coffee stencil in mind- one that I had purchased on Etsy (but here it is on Amazon!!).

And while I am basically a stenciling novice (having only really tried it once before), I decided to face my fear of stenciling again!

First, I sprayed a touch of spray adhesive to the back of the stencil. I let it dry until it was tacky but not wet, then smoothed my stencil onto the cutting board.

Next, I stippled the paint onto the coffee stencil. Then, I carefully removing most of the paint before touching it to the board.

Unfortunately, I was SO DARN EXCITED to see if it turned out, that I forgot to take a picture before I lifted the stencil off! But, look- it worked out just fine!

Next, I spritzed on a clear matte top coat to protect the stain and stenciling. I then it completely dry and cure overnight.

After that, I added a hanging mechanism to the back using D-rings and braided wire.

Finally, I screwed in a couple of white robe hooks to the front of the coffee sign decor.

And just like that, I had a wonderful coffee sign for our kitchen. Talk about an easy and straight-forward thrift store makeover, eh?

Simple farmhouse kitchen decor in the form of a coffee sign, complete with hanging coffee mugs (also from the thrift store). Isn’t it so cute?

And I know, I know- the stenciling isn’t perfect. But I’m happy enough with how my coffee kitchen decor turned out.

It makes me want a pumpkin spiced latte and get in the autumn frame of mind. And it also makes me want to go thriftin’ for more cutting boards- ha!
