Junkin’ Journey: Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina

When you think of Augusta, Georgia, chances are visions of golf, azaleas, and green jackets come to mind, thanks to The Masters tournament. But I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy Augusta…or its sister-from-across-the-river city, North Augusta (which is in South Carolina). One of my all-time favorite vintage shops is in Augusta, and was the catalyst for this trip. But this time around, I checked out a few other shops and wanted to share them with you!Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Athens, Georgia

Junkin’ Journey: Athens, Georgia

Every now and again, I travel to a small or medium-sized town and realize just how unsung or underappreciated it is- and folks, that’s definitely how I feel about Athens, Georgia. College football fans and most southerners think of Athens as simply the University of Georgia and the revered Bulldogs. And music fans know of Athens thanks to hometown bands such as the B-52s and R.E.M.

But I’m here to tell you that for a lover of vintage, it is SO MUCH MORE than college football and alternative rock.  And here’s the skinny- I hit a BUNCH of shops without even getting into the heart of downtown where all the vintage clothing shops and mid-century modern home décor stores reside.

So, you see, my friends? It’s a vintage/junk/retro destination…just check the Saturday game schedule before you make the trip…ha! I hit it up the first Saturday of Spring Break, which was the perfect time to go junkin’… want to see what I discovered?

Shotgun!: Atlanta, Georgia (Part 1)

Shotgun!: Atlanta, Georgia (Part 1)

If I haven’t mentioned it before, my husband’s favorite past time is sword fighting- with the long sword, to be precise. He studies historical European martial arts with various groups in the Carolinas as well as Eastern martial arts at a local dojo. When he had an opportunity to train with a sword fighting studio in Atlanta, Georgia, we decided to turn it into a long weekend…which meant I could go junkin’!

Truth be told, a city as large as Atlanta offers COUNTLESS options for antiques, vintage, and thrift stores…so this post will just have to count as “Part 1” in a series…because with Atlanta not all that far from me, you can be sure that I’ll be returning many more times…for many more blog posts.

Let’s get started- here are the places I hit this time around!Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Chamblee, Georgia

Junkin’ Journey: Chamblee, Georgia

Exploring the Atlanta area has been long overdue for me…I mean, I live a scant drive away from this cosmopolitan southern city and yet I rarely make the time to head down Interstate 85. So, let this blog post be the first part in rectifying an overdue trip!

Puttering around Chamblee, Georgia was never part of my original plan- I had focused on Metro Atlanta with only a stop or two scheduled for Chamblee.

WHAT WAS I THINKING??

For the person that loves antiquing- especially the person that loves to have a wide variety of stores- Chamblee hosts a varied collection of shops. From fine European to rusty “mantiques” to Mid-Century Modern to architectural/hardware salvage to shabby vintage…even to thrift stores!…you’ll find it in Chamblee.

My husband and I hit up several of the shops in the downtown area- not all, but most. And these, my friends, were our favorites…Read more ›

Shotgun!- Country Living Fair 2014 (Atlanta, Georgia)

For the past two years, something has prevented me from attending the Country Living Fair in Atlanta. Scheduling conflicts, the fleeting desire to be frugal, blah, blah, blah. But this year, I was determined! Nothing was going to hold me back.

I came, I saw, and I…well…I’m pretty sure it conquered me.

For junkies like me, this is the BIG ONE- something people pilgrimage to. And I was NOT disappointed.Read more ›
