Terracotta Jack-o-Lantern for a Boho Halloween

Terracotta Jack-o-Lantern for a Boho Halloween

Earlier this year as I worked on my Thrift the Look: Boho Decor blog post, I thrifted and collected a bunch of terracotta pots. I’m not much of a gardener, indoors or outdoors,so the clay pots went back into the garage when I was done. But as October drew closer, I started to wonder how one would look as a terracotta jack-o-lantern.

Now, a flower pot turned into a jack-o-lantern isn’t exactly a brand new idea. But I wanted to take it a step further by using an artificial cactus as a pumpkin stem!

And as luck would have it, Michaels had a bunch of these columnar cactus and paddle cactus picks on clearance.

Crafting kismet, I tell you! Now I just needed to find out if my terracotta jack-o-lantern would turn out as cute in person as it was in my head.

Modern Halloween Decor with Terracotta Pots

As you may remember from NUMEROUS projects of mine, I’m a big fan of using adhesive felt for a Halloween jack-o-lantern (or ghost!) face. It’s easy to use, found in any craft store, and is wonderfully opaque on any surface.

So, OF COURSE, I grabbed a sheet of it for my terracotta jack-o-lanterns.

I’m also a fan of free-hand sketching a Halloween jack-o-lantern face, as it reminds me of the imperfect pumpkin carvings my mom and I would do when I was a kid.

So, I flipped the adhesive felt over and went to work with a pencil.

Next, I cut out the pieces and sized them accordingly to the small terracotta pot that I was working with.

No waiting for paint to dry, no crooked paint lines- that’s the beauty of using adhesive felt for projects like that!

Because in a matter of moments, my terracotta jack-o-lantern was done and ready to be “planted”.

So, I grabbed a columnar cactus and pressed it into a piece of wet floral foam. I set that into my terracotta jack-o-lantern and grabbed some dried black beans.

AKA, my “potting soil” for my Halloween flower pots.

And just like that, my terracotta jack-o-lantern was done! Well, the first one was…

Pretty quickly, I made two more Halloween flower pots to join my first one. Aren’t they adorable?

And the artificial cactus was PERFECT as a pumpkin stem!

It’s such a fresh take on holiday decor. I don’t know if boho Halloween decor is a “thing”, but I think these definitely qualify!

If you’re a talented gardener, then real cactus would be wonderful! But I’m afraid I need to stick to the faux variety.

Either way, I love my terracotta jack-o-lanterns for modern Halloween decor!
