Thrifted Sweater Halloween Hoops

Thrifted Sweater Halloween Hoops

Embroidery hoops and Halloween… who knew they could go hand in hand for so many projects?

Especially when you throw in a $1 bright orange sweater from the thrift store. White tag clothing was $1 the other day at a local thrift store… and with Halloween on my mind, coupled with the desire to curl up on the couch with Netflix and a sewing project…well, the $1 orange sweater came home with me.

Definitely NOT my color…but perfectly festive for Halloween.

Using an old sweater as the backdrop for embroidery is nothing new… but it’s typically a Christmas-time project. Why not switch it up for Halloween with some spooky hoops? This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.

I hastily painted my thrifted embroidery hoop in a bright-ish orange craft paint, cut out a square of sweater, and tucked it into the hoop.

See a pumpkin coming to life?

Would you look at that?  It’s GOURD-geous!

Ha!

Now- before we go any further- you have to promise not to make fun of my free-hand drawings that I turn into embroidery shapes. Cool?

Cool.

I cut out shapes for a jack-o-lantern face (not a very original face, I admit) and pinned them onto my hooped sweater.

Jack-o-lantern, freestyle!

Then, I used black embroidery floss and back-stitched around each “pattern” piece.

I like stitching along a pattern…easy-peasy.

To make it really stand out, I did two layers of stitching and ended up with a cute lil’ jack-o-lantern.

Awww…look at little Jackie!

But I didn’t stop there! I added oodles of goldenrod floss inside of his face features to make him look all a-glow. A quick little felt stem was added, and he was good to go

LOVE!

Since I had lots of chopped up sweater left (and a lengthy Netflix queue), I made a few more Halloween Hoops. Aren’t they cute? Again, no chuckling about my drawing skills… or lackthereof!

A Halloween trio!

I think this project may become a new obsession. I’ll try not to do these for EVERY holiday… but I make no guarantees. And if you’re looking for more Repurposed/Upcycled Halloween project ideas, check out my full collection here!
