150+ Ideas for Thrifty Christmas Decor

150+ Ideas for Thrifty Christmas Decor

I know what you must be thinking- it’s too early for Christmas! But take it from someone who knows, if you wait until Thanksgiving or even early December to work on your holiday craft projects, they’ll never get done. With that in mind, the Thrift Store Decor Team and I pooled our favorite holiday projects into a massive collection of thrifty Christmas decor ideas.

Now, don’t get me wrong- I’m not ushering Autumn out the door just yet. But sometimes it helps to have a little Christmas inspiration early on. That way, you can keep a mental list of projects whenever you’re out thrifting or Christmas shopping.

And even if you don’t plan on doing any thrifting or outside shopping as a safety precaution, you may still be interested in some new ideas for your old “stuff”! At least, I know I’m always interested in that.

But before we dive into the FULL collection of ideas, I’d love to share some of my favorite thrifty Christmas projects from the collection (mine and from the team)!

Thrifty Christmas Project Ideas

I love digging out this old cheese dome each Christmas season. I upcycled it into a miniature ice skating pond, and it’s just the most charming thing.

Now here’s a thrifty idea I think we can all get behind! Decorating plain brown kraft paper to make whimsical wrapping paper and gift tags, as Petticoat Junktion has done.

I also repurposed a bamboo wine rack into a fun take on a tabletop tree. The openings for wine bottles were positively meant to hold some of my vintage Shiny Brite ornaments, don’t you think?

Speaking of retro, check out these vintage-inspired diorama ornaments from House of Hawthornes. Aren’t they DELIGHTFUL?

Obviously, I can’t reminisce about some of my favorite thrifty Christmas decor ideas without mentioning a flannel project, right? I mean, my first book comes out in a few months and it’s ALL ABOUT flannel!

So, this plaid Christmas wreath from a multitude of flannel shirts is most definitely a thrifty favorite of mine!

And while I’ve made one candy cane project in the past, this version that Domestically Speaking made uses clamps from the hardware store!

I’ve got a long list of thrift Christmas decor ideas to share with you in the coming weeks. Here’s hoping I find enough time to create and blog about them all!

But I’ve reminisced about my old projects for long enough. Let’s dive into the full collection from the Thrift Store Decor Team!

WOW! Talk about hitting the motherload of holiday inspiration. Some of them are so thrifty that they’re completely temporary, like these fake-out pillows!

It just makes me extra excited to dive into the upcycling projects on my list. Christmas is likely going to look a little different this year- more cozy/homey than gatherings and festive parties.

And maybe even using random items from around the house for projects. Would you even have guessed that these spindle ornaments started as chess pieces?

But that’s ok with me. It just means more reason to fill our house with wonderful Christmas enchantment to feel festive at home.

So, let the countdown to Christmas officially begin! Maybe even with a DIY advent calendar, like this one.

  1. What a great list, I’m checking out several things and pinning but my all time favorite is that wine rack tabletop tree that you made!! Every time I go thrifting I’m scouring the shelves for a wine rack like that!

Thank you so much, Tania!! I can still recall agonizing about painting it, and how much hate mail I’d get for doing so. Thankfully, I’ve never gotten any, so I think I made the right choice!

  2. Reading these was as good as a Christmas present! I Christmas-craft all year long as I make things for our church’s bazaar–a little different this year due to Covid, to sell in my vintage booth, and for gifts!! I will be crazy for the next 2 weeks, then a slight lull till Christmas crazies start. I have at least started early this year!

  3. Such great Christmas inspiration!

    What fun ideas.

  5. I love the candy cane made out of clamps!! You’ve given me so much inspiration!
