Junkin’ Journey: Columbia, South Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Columbia, South Carolina

2017 is underway, which means it’s a new year of junkin’ journey road trips! To kick it off, we recently headed down the highway to my home state capital: Columbia, South Carolina. Now, Columbia isn’t all that far away from me…and I don’t really know why I waited so long to explore the vintage/junking scene there!

Before I begin, though, I want to give a special shout-out to my Columbia-area friends that recommended some of the places that we hit- so thank you to Shanika Pichey, Melissa at Restoration 41, and April Blake! They pointed me in the right direction and helped shape my itinerary with some great suggestions.

Speaking of which, ready to see where I went and what I loved?Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Marion and Black Mountain, North Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Marion and Black Mountain, North Carolina

It’s hard to believe that 2016 is nearly complete, but we were lucky enough to find a weekend to squeeze in one final junkin’ trip this year. As you may remember, I have a particular fondness for the Appalachians in the fall- when the leaves on the trees wash the mountains in a perpetual sunset and “Nature’s glitter” swirls and twirls behind the car as we zoom by.

This time around, we didn’t go too far from home and explored towns along Interstate 40 just east of Asheville, North Carolina- focusing on Black Mountain through Marion. We checked out a BUNCH of shops but I’ve narrowed down my favorites- as highlighted below…Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Chattanooga, Tennessee

Junkin’ Journey: Chattanooga, Tennessee

Twenty-some odd years ago, my mother and I drove the family cars down from the Chicago suburbs to southwest Florida as part of their big move south. It was a sweltering June day and an otherwise fun road-trip. The otherwise part, though? One of the cars- the one I was driving- overheated in Chattanooga, Tennessee…and I had to drive with the heat cranked on in 90°F weather.

I realize I should have blamed Ford, but instead I blamed Chattanooga…and I hadn’t returned since. But I’ve lived half my life since that sweaty day, and decided to lift the ban and take a long, junkin’ weekend to Chatt-town. I’m happy to say that we had a fantastic time…and in true Chattanooga form, the past is quite literally water (from the Tennessee River) under the Bridge.Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina

As soon as the first inkling of Fall hits- be it a nip in the air, the faintest color on leaves, or pumpkin ANYTHING- we get a hankering for a road trip into the mountains. Autumn and mountain life just seem to go hand-in-hand…and since it’s September, it seemed natural for us to pack up the truck in search of vistas and vintage. This time around, we decided to go back to Boone, North Carolina- a place we’ve been before but never fully explored.

Home of Appalachian State University, it’s an energetic college town smack dab in the- you guessed it- Appalachian Mountains. And since we were driving through Blowing Rock, North Carolina on the way to Boone, we couldn’t help but stop at a few shops along the way…Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina

Junkin’ Journey: Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina

When you think of Augusta, Georgia, chances are visions of golf, azaleas, and green jackets come to mind, thanks to The Masters tournament. But I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy Augusta…or its sister-from-across-the-river city, North Augusta (which is in South Carolina). One of my all-time favorite vintage shops is in Augusta, and was the catalyst for this trip. But this time around, I checked out a few other shops and wanted to share them with you!Read more ›

Junkin’ Journey: Louisville, Kentucky

Junkin’ Journey: Louisville, Kentucky

When you enjoy exploring new places for vintage treasures…and your husband enjoys good bourbon… and you BOTH enjoy a fun road trip, then the perfect place to go is Kentucky! This time around, we decided to explore Louisville…but I can definitely see future trips to KY in our future (I’m looking at you, Lexington).

We spent an extended Memorial Day weekend checking out shops around town, distilleries in the area, and a vintage market that coincided with our visit. There was an awful lot to see and discover, and I know I didn’t even scratch the surface of all the vintage & antiques shops in the area…but I discovered a few and wanted to share what I found!Read more ›

Shotgun!: Country Living Fair 2016 (Lebanon, Tennessee)

Shotgun!: Country Living Fair 2016 (Lebanon, Tennessee)

A couple of years ago, I attended my first Country Living Fair in Atlanta and just had a terrific time. If you’ve never been to a CLF before, here’s what you need to know: they are HUGE events and it’s impossible to see everything in one day…and the booths are amazing, so you’ll be plunking down some hard-earned dollars for unique treasures that you just may never find again. So when I had the chance to attend this year’s Fair in Lebanon, Tennessee (just outside of Nashville), I jumped at the chance!

Junkin’ Journey: Athens, Georgia

Junkin’ Journey: Athens, Georgia

Every now and again, I travel to a small or medium-sized town and realize just how unsung or underappreciated it is- and folks, that’s definitely how I feel about Athens, Georgia. College football fans and most southerners think of Athens as simply the University of Georgia and the revered Bulldogs. And music fans know of Athens thanks to hometown bands such as the B-52s and R.E.M.

But I’m here to tell you that for a lover of vintage, it is SO MUCH MORE than college football and alternative rock.  And here’s the skinny- I hit a BUNCH of shops without even getting into the heart of downtown where all the vintage clothing shops and mid-century modern home décor stores reside.

So, you see, my friends? It’s a vintage/junk/retro destination…just check the Saturday game schedule before you make the trip…ha! I hit it up the first Saturday of Spring Break, which was the perfect time to go junkin’… want to see what I discovered?

Shotgun!: Brevard, North Carolina (A Junkin’ Journey)

Shotgun!: Brevard, North Carolina (A Junkin’ Journey)

I love to sit down, study the map, and figure out where I want to head to next for my latest junkin’ journey. For obvious reasons (money, time…), I tend to stick relatively close to home- with the occasional longer sojourn to further-away stops. But for right now, I decided to head back into western North Carolina.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a mountain town.

So we headed up the mountain- literally- to Brevard, North Carolina. Home of the White Squirrel Festival, Brevard is a charming little town with an equally charming Main Street. And I’m happy to report, several charming little shops to explore…shall we?Read more ›

Shotgun!: Knoxville, Tennessee (Part 1)

Shotgun!: Knoxville, Tennessee (Part 1)

I don’t know about you, but I love to visit college towns. They are perpetually injected with youth and the funky vibe that comes from college coeds. And as all things “vintage” become trendier, college towns are really turning into hotbeds of places to thrift for cool, unusual, or wonderfully seasoned secondhand pieces. So, revisiting Knoxville, Tennessee moved to the top of my junkin’ journey list! Home to University of Tennessee’s main campus, it’s a fun mountain town that boasts a LOT of thrifting and antiques-shopping options.

I ended my weekend with a carload of goodies and a text message apology to Jon for everything I was bringing home. But, where, oh where, did I go?Read more ›
