Organizing Craft Supplies in a Spinning Spice Rack

Organizing Craft Supplies in a Spinning Spice Rack

Over the years, I have collected and gathered any number of small craft supplies. Buttons, beads, jewelry findings, bells, pom poms…you get the picture. I needed a craft organizer that could safely hold those small “bits” and it seemed like a spinning spice rack from the thrift store would be ideal for this.

After a successful thrifting run and a couple of well-spent dollars, I had an ideal spice rack for repurposing. Though it wasn’t anything special or unique, it hit all the points.

It rotated cleanly, it came with a full set of empty spice jars, and the jars had screw on tops.

I now had just what I needed for my upcycling idea and the price was right. Now, all I needed to do was give it a refreshed makeover and then I could focus on organizing craft supplies!

Upcycling a Spinning Spice Rack

My plan for the spinning spice rack wasn’t going to take much effort, but these are the craft supplies I used:

First, I spray painted the wood base in a warm silver, to give it a little panache…a little style.

I love this paint. The color is fantastic; it’s a primer and paint all-in-one; it has an ergonomic trigger; and it dries satiny smooth.

After painting, it looked so much…tonier…which is a word rarely used in reference to a spice rack. But it looked clean and fresh, which is exactly what I wanted.

Next, it was time to focus on the empty spice jars, which were key to my craft supply organizer.

After cleaning the empty spice jars, I peeled off the labels and removed the shaker tops.

And as silly as it sounds, I actually saved these shaker tops for a movie-related project!

Then, with chalkboard paint or blackboard paint in hand, I painted the tops of my spice jars.

These would become chalkboard labels to help organize all the little bits!

After the chalkboard paint dried, I filled the glass spice jars with my tiniest craft supplies!

Lastly, I grabbed a chalk pen (so much better than regular chalk!) to create orderly chalkboard labels.

The perfect finishing touch for organizing my craft supplies!

And there you have it- a spinning spice rack for craft storage that looks fantastic.

I love having chalkboard labels on the glass spice jars in my craft organizer, too. That’ll make it so easy to re-label any time I change out the contents!

It really is the perfect addition to my craft room organizing needs! Craft room organization (or sewing room organization, I suppose) is a constant struggle for any crafter or maker.

I think if I find another spinning spice rack, I’ll make one for some garage organization. Those little glass spice jars would be ideal for organizing hardware such as nails, screws, bolts, etc.

Oh darn, another reason to go on a treasure hunt!

And if you enjoyed this upcycling idea for organizing craft supplies, then you’ll love how I repurposed this utensil caddy as a paint brush holder!

Plus, did you know that my first book, “Crafting with Flannel”, has an entire chapter dedicated to storage craft ideas? I hope you’ll check it out!

It’s perfect for jewelry findings- not only can those little tiny bits really add up, but they will spill and get away from you in a hot second! Thanks so much, Linda!

  11. the spice racks also can hold Keurig cups.

    • Sadie Seasongoods says

I suppose that’s true! We’ll never have a Keurig because of the non-recyclable wasteful cups, but I know people have used these spice racks for that purpose. Happy 2018, Edith!
