DIY Earring Holder from a Coffee Pod Holder

DIY Earring Holder from a Coffee Pod Holder

Over the years, I’ve upcycled a lot of different things into jewelry storage. From necklaces to bracelets to rings, I’ve assembled quite the collection. But not a DIY earring holder…until today. Because when I spotted this coffee pod holder while thrifting, that’s what I immediately thought of.

Now truth be told, I hadn’t created an earring holder because I was already repurposing this old wire urn as one.

But it wasn’t a perfect storage solution by any means. And I’d already thinned out my collection of screw back earrings since this photo was taken. Yes, screw back…I never got my ears pierced!

Besides, the K-cup holder that I’d thrifted was so much nicer than the urn I was using. And it rotated, which was something I’d yearned for. All I needed to do was give the coffee pod holder a simple makeover to get rid of the chrome.

Coffee Pod Holder Makeover

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t do anything revolutionary to this coffee pod holder. I could have hung my earrings on it as-is and be done with it.

But the chrome wasn’t really my style. And since a lot of my screw back earrings were silver tone (or gold tone), I wanted the DIY earring holder to be a color that allowed the metallic colors to really pop.

So, first, I set up my spray paint station and gave the K-cup holder a quick coat of metal primer. This would give the metal a better surface for the paint to adhere to.

Skipping this step would be an option, of course. But I already had the can in my garage, so why not use it?

Next, I applied a couple of light coats of this oil rubbed bronze color. Again, I already had it in the garage and it seemed like the perfect color to use.

I’ve actually used this paint before on projects, most notably on this hanging scale makeover.

This coffee pod holder was NOT the easiest thing to paint. It wasn’t easy to get behind all the circular holders and cover up all traces of chrome. But once I was satisfied with the coverage, I set it aside to dry.

Lastly, I give it a quick topcoat with yet another can in my garage. Ideally I would have used a satin clear coat, but matte was what I had.

And when all was said and done, the coffee pod holder looked like this. Definitely better than the chrome look (in my opinion!).

I meant DIY earring holder, of course! It just needed my collection of screw back earrings to be added…

DIY Earring Holder from a Coffee Pod Holder

Like I said at the beginning, this was a pretty basic makeover. The beauty is in the repurpose of it all. While we’d never own a Keurig coffeemaker (too much waste, not great coffee), I was definitely jonesing for better earring storage.

And this thrifted piece was seriously ideal for that.

Not only does it hold quite a few pairs of earrings, but it spins so smoothly. And unlike the urn I’d used previously, the earrings are now nicely spaced out. No more bumping other earrings off as I disconnected the pair I planned on wearing at the time.

Of course, I’m a bit of a weirdo with my old screw back earrings! But I think this would work for most non-post or non-stud pierced earrings, right? Fishhook, lever closures, and hoops could hang on this just fine.

Tell me if I’m wrong, though- I’m certainly no expert in pierced earrings, that’s for sure! And on a completely unrelated note: if you follow The Kitten Lady or I Am the Cat Photographer on IG or FB, doesn’t that cat statue look like their boy, Ferguson??

As simple as the makeover was, I hope you still enjoyed this super easy upcycle and repurpose idea. If a new DIY earring holder is something you could use, definitely keep your eye out for a K-cup holder like this. Or even a similarly-shaped spice rack might work…

And if you’re interested in other jewelry storage options, maybe a holder like this one might come in handy…

For your pins and brooches, this is a fun upcycled holder, as well.
