Few things in life are certain, but this one is: step into any thrift store in any town, and you will find a plethora of picture frames. Why so many end up donated to thrifts, I’ll never know. But the good news is that there are tons of ideas for upcycled picture frames out there.
I’ve repurposed them in many ways, from the simple to the complex. This one was a simple project, that’s for sure- in fact, “project” might be too strong a word for it!
Not only can picture frames be given a basic (or even complex) makeover to be used to house photos and art in your home, but they can be transformed drastically into something else entirely, like this tray that I made.
But all photo frames have upcycling potential, from round frames, to multi photo frames, and cute picture frames.
I’ve certainly made my fair share of repurposed projects from cheap frames. For example, I made this framed cork board from thrift store pieces.
And this neutral Fall wreath that started out as a picture frame!
To get your creative juices flowing, I’ve gathered together some of my favorite ideas for upcycled picture frames. Even some that are STILL USED as picture frames, just in unique or unexpected ways.
And plenty of ideas when they’re used in completely DIFFERENT ways that have nothing to do with photos or graphics (like this embroidery project below).
No matter which kind you find while thrifting (wooden picture frames, gold picture frames, family picture frames, etc.), there’s bound to be an idea in here for you.
30+ Ideas for Upcycled Picture Frames
So, do you feel inspired by all these old picture frame ideas? I’m sure I’ll be doing something again in the near future. Whether I’m giving one a simple makeover…
Or incorporating one into seasonal decor, like this “haunted” house family photo!
And you’ll likely start to recognize some of my favorite old frames when you see them as backdrops in my project photos!
What can I say, I just love an empty ornate picture frame.
If you enjoyed these repurposing ideas for picture frames, then you may also be intrigued by this shabby chic wall decor I made from an old window frame, too!
Plus, I even used picture frames for a couple of projects in my book, “Crafting with Flannel”. You can purchase it online from Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart!
Craft on!
