Wine & Pie Message Board

Wine & Pie Message Board

A quick glance through Restoration Hardware’s website (or a stroll through their store) will show you just how sublime the “industrial/rustic-chic” style of home décor can be. And it will also show you just how much money people are willing to spend on that style.

Not this girl- maybe the outlet or clearance prices for me- but RH is typically well beyond reason for my spending habits. But I do enjoy browsing through their items…

Take this mirror, for example. At $649, it’s really out of context with my thrifty lifestyle.

My inspiration…

But the style of it? Well, that can be replicated. And while I’ve created mirrored items in the past, I wasn’t craving another hanging mirror- at least for now! And I didn’t have a large, round iron pan nor did I have any strong rope.

But.

But.

I *did* have a vintage tie tin, a weathered leather belt from the thrift store, and a plethora of wine corks.

Let’s make a memo board instead!

Using up wine corks is always on my to-do list. And while I love my DIY cork trivet, it just didn’t use up nearly enough of my cork stash! And a wine cork message board has also been on my project list, so why not make one based on that RH mirror style?? This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.

So, the first step was to create a hanging mechanism for my message board. Enter the leather belt! First, we marked the tin where we wanted to attach the belt (using painters tape), and dented the tin with an awl.

Getting ready to make holes…

Then, holes were drilled through the dents (the dents keep the drill from just spinning over the metal).

Makin’ holes…

Since I have an abundance of leatherworking tools and bits, I used standard rivets to attach the belt handle to the pie tin. But office-supply brads would work (maybe glue the brad “legs” to the pie tin to secure them) or small nuts & bolts would work, too.

From my leather-working stash!

…and it worked like a charm!

And look at that, it hangs perfectly!

So far, so good…

Now it was time to add the corks! I decided on a zig-zag design and began hot-gluing them in place. I didn’t need to fill in every square inch of my tin, but I did use heavy-duty scissors (and a sharp knife) to cut some of the corks down to size.

Easy as…pie?

Minutes later? I had a message board!

Ta-da!

Perfect for posting reminders, notes, lists, phone messages, etc. And yes, it’s not quite as streamlined as Restoration Hardware’s mirror. But it cost me just a couple of dollars compared to $649 for the fancy mirror… And THAT, my friends, makes it priceless.

Craft on!
